DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL WELFARE AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT ENGAGES TEACHERS AND PUPILS OF FOUR BASIC SCHOOLS

The Atebubu-Amantin Municipal Office of the Department of Social Welfare and Community and the Girl’s Child Education Unit of GES with support from UNICEF has engaged four basic schools namely; Garadima M/A Primary and JHS, New Konkrompe M/A JHS, Sanwakyi/Afrefreso M/A JHS and Kokofu R/C Primary and JHS on child protection and other related issues using the community Child protection facilitation toolkit. Some of the topics discussed during the programmes included; Sexual and gender base violence, gender roles, physical and verbal abuse, child marriage, child labour, online safety and teenage pregnancies and the Back-to-school campaign on the 7th and 8th February, 2024.

A total of five hundred and fifty-five persons comprising two hundred and fifty-six (256) school boys, two hundred and sixty-three (263) school girls, twenty-eighty (28) male teachers and eight (8) female teachers.

The engagement was interactive and the use of Mobile phones, peer influence, broken marriages, children participating in night public activities such as wake keeping, attending Jams to late hours and poor parenting were identified as contributing to child protection concerns in the municipality. After the engagement some suggestions were recommended for consideration including;

Teenage pregnancy among school girls in the municipality was identified as a major child protection concern and more public engagement on the topic will be undertaken with all relevant stakeholders.
