The Atebubu-Amantin Municipal Assembly has met with traders at the Atebubu Central Market to address concerns following a devastating fire outbreak in the early hours of Saturday, May 4, 2024. The fire, suspected to have been caused by an unattended open flame, ravaged the market, destroying four sheds (totaling 96 rooms) and causing extensive damage to goods.
Municipal Chief Executive Hon. Edward Owusu reported that goods worth GHC 1.5 million were destroyed, while the affected structures were valued at GHC 2.3 million. He emphasized the need for immediate safety measures, including the removal of unauthorized extensions to existing structures, to prevent future incidents. The MCE also announced plans to rebuild the damaged sections of the market and secure financial assistance for affected traders.
Issah Abu Dimmie, Bono-East Regional Manager of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) and NPP parliamentary candidate for Atebubu-Amantin, assured traders of his organization’s support, noting that he had already consulted with the MASLOC CEO. Nana Ofori Yeboah, the Twafohene of the Atebubu Traditional Area, led a delegation of chiefs and pledged the commitment of Omanhene Ohenpong Yeboah Asiamah I to collaborate with officials in seeking government aid for the victims.
An official from the Ghana National Fire Service urged traders to exercise caution when handling fire and highlighted the importance of fire safety practices to prevent future tragedies.
During an open forum, traders raised critical issues, including inadequate lighting, poor security, and the lack of toilet facilities at the market. The assembly acknowledged these concerns and vowed to address them as part of broader efforts to improve market conditions.
The engagement underscored the collective commitment to restoring the market and ensuring the safety and well-being of all traders.
