The Atebubu-Amantin Municipal LEAP Implementation Committee (MLIC) has engaged 55 community focal persons in preparation for Ghana’s first quadrennial reassessment of the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) program. The January 15, 2025 meeting aimed to improve targeting accuracy for the cash transfer initiative that supports vulnerable households.
The objectives of the reassessment are update beneficiary registers after 16 years of operation, Identify households no longer eligible for LEAP, Reduce inclusion/exclusion errors in the program, Link graduated households to alternative support services.
Persons eligible to be registered includes persons in extreme poor households, Poor households: Receive one-time support before graduation and Non-poor households: Exited to accommodate new beneficiaries.
Focal persons trained during the pilot phase lessons and emphasis was placed on maintaining non-political, transparence during the selection process.
Mr. Emmanuel Bukari, District Liaison Officer stated that the exercise will create fairness by giving all extremely poor households equal opportunity to enroll. Also, Mr. Joseph K.B Tang, Municipal Coordinating Director, praised volunteers’ contributions while warning against politicizing the process.
Some other persons present were Municipal Planning Officer, Abdul Aziz Toyibu, Municipal Statistician, Joel Apambila Kassim, Assistant Social Development Officer, Edward Garr Newlove.
LEAP was launched in 2008, LEAP provides bi-monthly cash transfers to Ghana’s poorest households to alleviate poverty and build human capital.
