The Atebubu-Amantin Municipal Office of the Department of Agriculture has sensitized the Akokoa, Kumfia, and Abamba communities on the government’s flagship ‘Feed Ghana’ Programme.
According to the Municipal Head of the Department, Mr. Bright Atta Boateng, the initiative aims to increase food production for both domestic consumption and export. He explained that the programme, designed to ensure food security, will see the government invest in staples such as maize, rice, sorghum, soya beans, cassava, yam, and potato.
Additionallyaads, vegetable cultivation—including tomatoes, peppers, and onions—will be promoted, while livestock production (goats, sheep, cattle, pigs, and poultry) will be boosted. The initiative will also support tree crops such as mango, cashew, coconut, oil palm, and shea nut farming.
Mr. Atta Boateng outlined that the government will provide Quality planting and breeding materials, Tractor services and Subsidized agro-inputs.
Farmers will repay the support in kind with produce from their farms at an agreed date. He urged beneficiaries to maintain honesty in their dealings to ensure the sustainability of the initiative and allow others to benefit.
The programme presents a major opportunity for farmers in the municipality, especially as the area is set to be among the first beneficiaries of the proposed Farmer Service Centers. To access assistance, farmers must form groups of 15 to 40 members, though existing groups with more than 40 members will not be affected by this requirement.
During the sensitization, Mr. Atta Boateng and his team clarified farmers’ concerns. While many expressed optimism about the initiative, some raised concerns about past failures of similar programmes, where beneficiaries defaulted on repayments, leading to their collapse.
The Department assured farmers of strict monitoring to ensure the programme’s success and urged full participation to boost agriculture, enhance food security, and improve livelihoods.
