The Ninth Assembly of the Atebubu-Amantin Municipal Assembly has, for the second time, failed to elect a Presiding Member.
Following its inauguration on Monday, February 12, 2024, the current assembly was unable to elect a Presiding Member after two rounds of voting. This necessitated another meeting today in compliance with the Local Government Act (Act 936).
A third round of voting between Hon. Yahaya Dindiok and Hon. Michael Kwasi Kampatib again failed to produce a winner, as neither secured the required two-thirds majority. In accordance with the assembly’s Standing Orders, the Electoral Commission of Ghana called for fresh nominations. This led to Hon. Abdul Kwame Rahman and Hon. Charles Afful Agyei contesting for the position.
In the first round of voting, Hon. Charles Afful Agyei secured 23 votes, while Hon. Abdul Kwame Rahman received 16 votes, with 3 ballots rejected. A second round of voting also failed to break the deadlock, as Hon. Afful Agyei obtained 22 votes against his opponent’s 17, with another 3 ballots rejected.
The Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Edward Owusu, expressed concern over the assembly’s inability to elect a leader and urged members to prioritize resolving the impasse when the opportunity arises again.
